Element Shipmanagement SA. Offices in Peireus, Athens
2013-2017 AWARD of the HELLENIC INSTITUTE OF GREECE (EIA)
The concept was to highlight the main features of the existing space, such as its size, its orientation, its structure, etc.The old partitions, floors and ceilings were completely removed in order to reveal the concrete structure with the characteristic Zoellner slab, the prestressed beams and the columns. The simplicity of the space is emphasized by the structure and enhanced through the combination of its roughness and the use of typical textures of simple and timeless materials, such as wood, glass and metal. The direct relation of the interior space with the sea and the maximum possible opening of the whole space to the view of the constant and repetitive movement of the large cruise ships in the harbor, sometimes creates the illusion of a departure. These are allusions to “sailing” combined with other synthetic tools, such as the highlighting of the building’s hull, or the sculptural formation of selected areas and the sharp angles in a way that the space is flowing (reception furniture, meeting room, entrance to ancillary areas, etc.).
