Reconstruction of Heroon Polytechniou Square and Ethnikis Antistasis Square of the city of Trikala
Distinction in the Panhellenic Architectural Competition
The project concerns a proposal for the Architectural Competition "Regeneration of Iroon Polytechniou Square and Ethnikis Antistasis Square in the city of Trikala," which received a Distinction. In our proposal, the three squares - Iroon Polytechniou, Ethnikis Antistasis, and Riga Feraiou - function complementarily to each other, as a unified dynamic entity of the city of Trikala, without, however, depriving each one of its unique character and identity. The enhancement and strengthening of the monumental (axis-symmetric) character of the central Iroon Polytechniou Square, in dialog with a diagonal free movement, have defined the new geometry of the square. A central water surface is envisaged, from which the Sequoia and the monument of Stefanos Sarafis emerge, reinforcing the symbolic/transcendent character of the square's atmosphere. One side of the square is defined by three rows of concrete bleachers that serve as resting areas and for organizing events. The concrete amphitheatric contours of Ethnikis Antistasis Square attempt to adapt to the natural terrain. Thus, the level of the natural ground gradually descends, creating an amphitheater that faces river Lethaios.
